In the first portion of this course we have been exploring a variety of non-traditional drawing media, leading to a major drawing project in which the students will choose their preferred drawing tool.
In the context of “Drawing as Invention” in which drawing is used as a medium of play and exploration with a focus on process versus product, the students in the Drawing & Painting 2 course were challenged to create their own drawing tool out of a variety of unusual materials. Throughout the process of construction they could dip their new tool into a bowl of ink to test the mark. Their completed tool was then utilized to create gestural drawings of a series of birds. Removing a familiar tool, such as a pencil or brush, allowed the students to focus more on their mark making and capturing the essence of the bird through gesture.
